Wi-Fi QR Code Safety

A Wi-Fi QR code is convenient because guests can join a network without typing the SSID and password. The tradeoff is simple: anyone who can scan the code can read or use the network details.

Use a guest network when possible

A Wi-Fi QR code is best for a guest network, not the primary network used for private devices or internal systems. Guest networks let you change access without disrupting your main setup.

If the code will be printed in a public or semi-public place, assume it can be copied.

Treat the QR code like the password

The Wi-Fi payload contains the SSID, security type, and password when a password is required. A QR code makes that easier to scan, but it does not hide the credentials.

Do not place a Wi-Fi QR code somewhere you would not be comfortable placing the password itself.

Regenerate after password changes

Static Wi-Fi QR codes do not update themselves. If you change the network name, password, or security type, generate a new code and replace the old printed copy.

Destroy old copies when they should no longer grant access.

Generate locally for less exposure

A browser-local Wi-Fi QR generator avoids sending the network password to a QR generation server. That is a better fit for guest network cards, office signage, and temporary event access.
